The Book of Flora in Bloom

Flora came out a week ago and how seven days can contain so much, I couldn’t tell you.

We had a Cliterary Salon made up entirely of fanfiction of my work to celebrate the launch, and my face hurt from laughing and kissing my dear friends all night. Maggie Tokuda-Hall hosted with her trademark wit, and talked about how each of us would survive the apocalypse. Molly Sanchez, Joe Wadlington, and Lauren Parker all wrote fiction in the Road to Nowhere universe. Some of it was touching, some of it was gross, and most of it was screamingly funny. Annalee Newitz wrote fanfic in what she called “the larger Megaverse,” pulling instead from my Tiptree Honored short story, “Big Girl,” about a 300 ft tall teenager meeting a lover who could surprise her: a kaiju named Julia, who is sometimes called Godzilla.

It was one of the best nights of my life.

I’m doing a limited amount of touring coming up, in support of Flora. If you can see me at any of these events, I can’t promise it’ll be as grand as the ego-ballooning Road to Fanfic was. But there will be lots of time to tell stories and answer questions and sign books you want signed.

  1. I just finished the Book of Flora and just adored it. Thanks for your amazing imagination, hard word, literary prowess, and attention to people who have never gotten it before. You rock!! I just have one question. I assume that there will be another Book of…. Is that a fair assumption? I don’t want to say anything specific because I don’t want to leave any spoilers for anyone else. Anyway, thanks again. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! Three books is it, for this series. For now. But I left the door open, and one never knows what the future might bring. Your comment made my day. 🙂

  2. I’m currently reading the Book of Flora and am, as I was with the previous two volumes, completely enchanted. I love the clever and logical evolution of city names and find myself mentally mapping them as I read along. I especially adore the way you approach queer culture with a natural ease. It’s an openness I wish were more prevalent in storytelling and obviously, life in general. It feels like family, like home. Thank you.

      1. I still owe you several days-made in exchange for the ones I received while reading the series. Also, I’m cringing at how brown-nosey I sound, but it’s rare that I find writing that is so melodic and also staggeringly raw at the same time. I’m a writer/artist. When something reaches in and tattoos its mark on me, feel compelled to make sure the creator knows about it. Seems like it’s only fair, an exchange of sorts.

I have a question or two I’d love to ask, but I need to get my head out of the clouds and wipe this brown smear off my face first. 🙂
