Number One Fan in the NYT

It’s always a thrill to get a Google alert about my name and see that it’s anything but a Russian piracy site, but this was a treat among treats!

Danielle Trussoni put together a roundup of gothics and horrors for spooky season readers, and was kind enough to include “Number One Fan” in her list, with high praise:

“Number One Fan” is a retelling of Stephen King’s novel “Misery,”but power in 2022 looks a lot different than it did back in 1987, when “Misery” was published. Social media is a spyglass that can, with a flick of the wrist, open into a switchblade. Elison’s brutal, incisive novel cuts to the heart of what makes public figures vulnerable and asks us to question our voyeurism.”

Read the rest of the list here, including Cormac McCarthy’s newest. It’s also in print in the Sunday Review of Books, a fact for which my mom was suddenly fiending. I had to go figure out where to buy a physical newspaper these days. That turned into a multi0-state effort resulting in my dearest New Yorkers saving the day.

Made my day and then some! Love to be haunted by the Old Grey Lady.

Happy Halloween from me, the writer in the New York Times.
